Open Labs Albania is a non governmental, not for profit organization, dedicated to promote openness, freedom, transparency and decentralization by amplifying its voice as a community altogether.

Open Labs is a community of people from all ages, genders, ethnics and races, who are advocates of FLOSS ( Free Libre Open Source Software), the Open Web and Free Speech, who dedicate their time to free knowledge for everyone.

Our board is chosen in a democratic way and the technical decisions are taken by contributors who do the job. We cherish the support of many organizations; local, regional and international. In Open Labs, we believe that all the contributors should behave with each-other. By creating a space for constructive contribute, we can compare and give new ideas for more effective and successful ways to find better solutions for progress, by growing the size, diversity and power of our community.

Open Labs uses a community based approach to tackle problems locally ( but also regionally, and in some cases internationally). We have a global scope formed to educate about and advocate for the benefits open source/free software and to build bridges among different constituencies in the open source/free software community.

While we believe that there cannot be a decentralized and free society without free software (free as in freedom) , we promote the general open source ideology too, as it holds in many cases similar values the free software philosophy wants to achieve. We discourage the use of tools which benefit shareholders or individuals and not society, such as DRM, vendor lock-in, excessive copyright law, surveillance and similar.

As a result of these efforts, we have distilled a set of principles that we believe are critical for our community, and everyone who aligns their views and ideals with ours, to keep information, data, and tools accessible for everyone.

We set out these principles below:

  • Articulate a vision for FLOSS in Albania, which Open Labs wants to pursue
  • Speak to people whether or not they have a technical background;
  • Make Open Labs members proud of what we're doing altogether and motivate us to continue
  • Raise awareness in Albania (and not only) for the advantages of open source and FLOSS; and
  • Provide a framework for other people to advance this vision of FLOSS in Albania.

As a community with a variety of members of all backgrounds, communication is our most important asset, which is vital for our mission. Decision making needs to be distributed among the people responsible for it, in order to avoid any disagreements in future. This should happen though without making the whole process bureaucratic and corporate.

As it is in the nature of Open Labs, we like to work in the open, which means that we build our relationships based on trust, distributed leadership and other merits, whilst keeping the amount of rules to a minimum, in order to ensure freedom, yet respect the vast diversity of everyone in our community.To work towards our mission, we prefer delegating tasks and creating proactive contributors who can sustain themself, rather than giving orders.
